Tesfalem T. Araia
Is a researcher at the Forced Migration Studies Programme (FMSP), University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. As part of the FMSP's Migrant Policy and Practice Initiative (MPPI), he has worked on multiple projects ranging from human smuggling, the asylum system, and detention. He is currently working on labour migration in South Africa. Previously Tesfalem worked at the Eritrean Movement for Democracy and Human Rights in Pretoria as a researcher and project manager.
He completed his MA in 2005 at the FMSP on the role of migrant networks in shaping the journeys of migrants. His academic background combined history, political science and international relations. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University in Johannesburg in 2003. Tesfalem is fluent in English, Tigragna, and Amharic.
